Sonics Soliciting Ticket Renewals Despite Uncertain Future

Sonics Send Out Renewals
To Season-Ticket Holders |
The Sonics sent out season-ticket renewal forms last week but “notably absent
was any mention of the 2007-08 season possibly being the team’s last in Seattle,”
according to Frank Hughes of the Tacoma NEWS TRIBUNE. Sonics VP/Sales & Marketing
Brian Byrnes said, “What is in the renewal is a commitment from ownership to provide
three years of cost certainty if they renew this year.” Byrnes said that “several
dozen ticket holders renewed the first day the literature was received.” Hughes
reports a phone campaign is being conducted “to re-enlist previous season ticket
holders,” and pamphlets designed to “attract new season ticket buyers will go
out soon.” The club has around 7,000 fans with full- or partial-season ticket
plans. The team’s announced average attendance this year is 15,900, 93% of KeyArena’s
capacity of 17,072. That figure is down 2% from last season, but 80% of season-ticket
holders renewed for ’06-07, and Byrnes “expects similar success this season.”
Byrnes said that the Sonics’ marketing team “is using the new arena as a tool
to attract new customers” despite “pessimism over whether the Sonics’ bills seeking
public funding ... will be passed before the Legislature adjourns later this month”
(Tacoma
NEWS TRIBUNE, 4/3).
