MLS Fire Signing Mexican F Blanco As Designated Player

Blanco Becomes Second-
Highest Paid Player In MLS |
The MLS Fire are signing Mexican national team F Cuauhtemoc Blanco, making him
the “third high-profile international player to join” the league since the introduction
of the designated player rule in November, according to Bernardo Fallas of the
HOUSTON CHRONICLE. Blanco is “Mexico’s most popular player,” and if the 5,000
fans attending a meet-and-greet in Chicago last night on a day’s notice “was any
indication, he will be the second-most popular player in MLS behind” Galaxy MF
David Beckham. The Fire began pursuing Blanco last month “after the Dynamo passed
on a chance for the 34-year-old.” Both teams are owned by AEG. However, Blanco
is “viewed by many as just another aging star attempting to extend his career”
like Mexico’s Luis Hernandez and Carlos Hermosillo and Colombian Carlos Valderrama,
who all came to MLS past their prime” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 4/3). In Chicago,
Len Ziehm cites sources as saying that Blanco will receive a three-year contract
worth about $2M per season. The Fire “claims Blanco will be the second-highest-paid
MLS player” behind Beckham, but only $400,000 of his contract will count toward
the salary cap under the designated player rule (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 4/3).
