To Own MLB Team
Richard Lapchick of the Institute for Diversity & Ethics at the Univ. of Central Florida released his ’06 MLB Racial and Gender Report Card, granting the league an overall grade of a “B,” the combination of a “B+” for race and a “C+” for gender. MLB last year earned an overall “C+,” with a “B+” for race and a “D+” for gender. While the percentage of African-American players in MLB reached an all-time low 8.4% last year, 40.5% of MLBers were people of color, nearing the all-time high of 42% set in ‘97 when 17% were African American. Angels Owner Arte Moreno remains the only person of color to own an MLB team. Dodgers President & Vice Chair Jamie McCourt and Astros President of Business Operations Pam Gardner are the only two women serving in CEO/President roles. White Sox Senior VP & GM Ken Williams and Mets GM Omar Minaya are the only two people of color holding GM positions. In team front offices, 12.6% of VPs were people of color, while 15% were women. The percentage of senior team administrators who were people of color remained even at nearly 16%, while women saw an increase of two percentage points to 20%. According to MLB’s internal records, 19% were people of color and 29% were women. Of MLB’s 468 Central Office employees, 10.4% were African-American, 13.2% were Latino, 3% were Asian and less than one percent was Native American. Women made up 43% of the entire staff. At the senior exec level, 23% of the 43 employees were people of color, while 26% were women. Among players, 59.5% were white, 8.4% were African-American, 29.4% were Latino and 2.4% were of Asian descent (UCF).
