ESPN Boston Looking To Boost Ratings With Red Sox-Related Content |
ESPN Radio Boston hopes that the Red Sox moving the majority of their games from
WEEI-AM to sister station WRKO-AM, will give it “a chance to take a bite
out of” WEEI’s ratings, according to Jesse Noyes of the BOSTON HERALD.
ESPN Boston Program Director Len Weiner said that the station launched a new pregame
baseball show and moved Herald columnist Mike Felger’s show to an earlier
time slot in an attempt to “wrap baseball talk around Sox games, even though
it doesn’t have the play-by-play.” Noyes notes the station has also
landed ESPN baseball reporter Peter Gammons to do weekly call-ins, and the station
has MLB games throughout the season and the World Series through its ESPN affiliation.
ESPN Boston GM Jessamy Tang said that the station is “working to nearly
double its nighttime power.” Weiner noted this summer, the station will
also hold a contest where listeners will compete to call games for the Single-A
N.Y.-Penn League Lowell Spinners. Meanwhile, Noyes notes WEEI “isn’t
giving up its longheld Sox ties.” Wednesday’s programming has an “all-Sox-all-day
format, complete with Sox players and executives dialing in.” WEEI also
added a pre-game show at 6:00pm (BOSTON
HERALD, 4/3).
