MLB Season Preview

MLB Franchise Notes

In Cincinnati, Ryan Ernst reports former MLBer Pete Rose attended his first Opening Day at Great American Ball Park yesterday. Rose, who bought his own ticket, was not permitted on the field or in the clubhouse because of his lifetime ban from baseball. He “received an ovation when he was introduced and his picture shown on the video board” during the game. Later, Reds CEO Bob Castellini “received clearance” from MLB for Rose to make in-game radio and TV appearances on WLW-AM and FSN Ohio. Rose is currently the subject of an “extensive exhibit” at the Reds HOF Museum, the team’s “first official recognition of Rose” since the ballpark opened in ’03 (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 4/3).

D’RAYS: D’Rays VP & Chief Sales Officer Mark Fernandez said season-ticket sales are up 10% and sponsorships are up 20% this year. Meanwhile, the team is “investing dollars back into the community through a Little League field-rebuilding program and through partnerships with community-based companies.” Many new sponsorship deals include interactive fan activities at games (Larry Halstead, TAMPA BAY BUSINESS JOURNAL, 3/30 issue).

ROCKIES: Rockies Vice Chair Dick Monfort said that “last season’s progress and this year’s appearance of the Yankees has increased Rockies ticket sales.” The Rockies distributed 50,842 tickets to yesterday’s opener, a Coors Field record. All club-level seats are sold out for the June 19-21 series against the Yankees (DENVER POST, 4/3).

TICKET PRICES: After two consecutive seasons of increases greater than 5%, average MLB ticket prices rose only 2.5% for the ’07 season. For the sixth consecutive year, the Red Sox are the priciest team to watch play at their home facility. There were 19 teams that raised ticket prices, nine of which did so by more than 5%. The Fan Cost Index comprises the prices of two adult average-price tickets, two child average-price tickets, two small draft beers, four small soft drinks, four regular-size hot dogs, parking for one car, two game programs and two least expensive, adult-size adjustable caps. See a listing of club-seat prices (Team Marketing Report).
