Nike Recalls New Sumo2 Square Head Driver For Noncompliance

Nike Recalls Sumo2 Square Head
Driver Over Manufacturing Defect

Nike Golf issued a voluntary recall of its $480 Sumo2 square head driver, “saying that a manufacturing defect in some clubs makes them illegal for play under USGA rules,” according to Helen Jung of the Portland OREGONIAN. Some of the drivers “give the ball too much spring coming off the head of the club.” Nike would not say how many clubs were affected. Nike Golf President Bob Wood said that Nike “learned of the clubs’ illegality from the USGA,” which “had been notified by a competing club manufacturer.” The company is now producing conforming clubs and it said that Nike-sponsored pro golfers “have clubs that conform to USGA specifications.” Replacement clubs will be provided free of charge from March 26-April 30 (Portland OREGONIAN, 3/17).
