San Antonio May End Pursuit Of Second Professional Sports Team |
Bexar County (TX) has “essentially abandoned the idea” of landing a second major-league
pro team in San Antonio, after recent talks with MLB and NFL execs “indicate little
interest in [the city] as a relocation or expansion target,” according to Tom
Orsborn of the SAN ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. Bexar County sports consultant Michael
Sculley “plans to advise county commissioners to drop the idea of using revenue
from a proposed venue tax extension to fund pursuit of another team.” He added
that the commissioners “should instead focus on proposals to use the tax to finance
San Antonio River improvements,” as well as building a youth sports complex and
performance arts center. Sculley: “I’m trying to convince them, saying, ‘You guys
can become heroes in the public eye by not wasting money on a potential professional
team.’” Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff said, “We will continue to visit with
baseball and the NFL for down the line, but we don’t want that to hold us back
on these investments.” Wolff added that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell told him
in January that the league “has no interest in San Antonio at this time.” Sculley
said that a baseball exec told him there is a “slim chance a team could turn its
attention to San Antonio” (SAN
ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS, 3/16).
