Mountain Girls: Group Eyeing WNBA Team For Denver
Colorado-based Triple Crown Sports (TCS) is “exploring the idea of bringing a
WNBA team to Denver for the 2008 season,” according to David Krause of the DENVER
POST. TCS said that it has “received permission” from the WNBA to pursue a team.
TCS CEO David King indicated that the group has “secured $11[M] of the $15[M]
needed for franchise fees and operating capital.” The group has until September
15 to get the full amount secured, but King said, “We are well on our way.” King
added that the Pepsi Center would “host most of the home games, with a few in
another area venue, likely the Budweiser Events Center in Loveland.” King: “The
league is supportive of the concept.” Krause notes TCS owned the Colorado Chill,
which played three seasons in the now-defunct NWBL, and also “owns and operates
the women’s NIT” (DENVER
POST, 3/16).
