Pluck Of The Irish: High School Stops Using Notre Dame Logo
Indianapolis’ Cathedral High School has agreed to the Univ. of Notre Dame’s
request that it stop using Notre Dame’s leprechaun logo, according to Rob
Schneider of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. Notre Dame Associate VP/News & Information
Don Wycliff said the request is “what entities all over the world do”
to protect their trademarks. But Cathedral Alumni Association President Mary Boyle
noted that the school was founded in 1918 “by the same religious order that
founded Notre Dame.” Boyle: “Not a single alum I’ve talked with
sees this as a positive thing.” Cathedral President Stephen Helmich indicated
that “because the issue involves items for sale, such as school shirts,
it shouldn’t affect the logo that graces the school’s gym floor or
practice football field.” Cathedral “has removed a leprechaun image
from its Web site and notified parents Wednesday that teams or clubs should no
longer display” the image. Helmich said that the trademark issue “has
been simmering for years, but the latest letter the school received was ‘stronger
and had more of a cease-and-desist feel to it’” (INDIANAPOLIS
STAR, 3/16).
