Bonds Finally Signs Revised
Contract With Giants |
After reaching a preliminary agreement with the Giants on December 7, LF Barry
Bonds has officially signed a one-year, $15.8M contract that has been approved
by MLB, according to Henry Schulman of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Bonds waited to sign
the deal even after the Giants “removed a clause relating to personal appearances
that caused the commissioner’s office to reject the initial contract.”
An MLB source said that the clause was the “only revision in the contract
that Bonds signed Thursday.” Intact are “stipulations that will allow
the Giants to void the deal if Bonds is indicted and forbid Bonds’ personal
trainers from working in the clubhouse and other nonpublic areas of the ballpark.”
Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, has “downplayed the indictment clause,
saying provisions in baseball’s [CBA] render it moot.” Bonds has said
that he is “fine with the personal-trainer clause, adding he will continue
to work with the trainers outside the ballpark.” The contract allows Bonds
to earn another $4.2M in performance bonuses (SFGATE.com,
2/15).
