Magowan Sends Letter To Season-Ticket
Holders Explaining Barry Bonds Deal |
MLB Giants Managing General Partner Peter Magowan sent a letter to season-ticket
holders last Monday that “outlined the club’s reasons for re-signing Barry Bonds,
acknowledging it was a ‘particularly controversial and difficult decision,’” according
to Andrew Baggarly of the SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS. Magowan wrote, “The process of
negotiating this contract was complex, lengthy and highly unconventional. This
decision was not taken lightly and we spent significant time evaluating all of
the elements and circumstances surrounding the negotiations.” Baggarly noted the
letter was e-mailed to 27,000 season-ticket holders “shortly before the club announced”
Bonds’ one-year, $15.8M contract. The deal has not been completed because MLB
“objected to provisions regarding personal appearances.” The letter was not an
“extraordinary measure,” as the club “often sends ‘state of the team’ e-mails
from Magowan or [GM] Brian Sabean to its season-ticket base” (SAN
JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 2/3).
