Geico’s Caveman Makes Cameo On Phil Simms’ All-Iron Team

Geico’s Caveman Tees It Up With
Simms In All-Iron Team Segment

The introduction to Sunday’s CBS broadcast of “Phil Simms All-Iron Team: Difference Makers” featured the Geico Caveman playing golf with Simms. The segment began with “Angeles National Golf Club. Hole No. 1. Sometime last week” on-screen. The interaction between Simms and the Caveman on the golf course continued throughout the 60-minute broadcast, with Geico airing two ads during that time frame.

The Caveman, dressed in a pink shirt and white pants, asks Simms, “So, what we are we playing for?”
Simms: “Let’s just have a little fun.”
Laughing, the Caveman says, “Just have fun? What is this, youth soccer?”
Simms: “Alright, ten dollars a hole.”
Caveman: “Fine with me. I hope you got 180 bucks. So you doing that All-Metal Men club thing again this year?”
Simms: “You mean the All-Iron team? Yeah, I’m doing it, along with Jim Nantz.”
Caveman: “Who’s on the team?”
Simms: “Just watch the show.”
Caveman: “Dude, don’t be like that. Give me a name. One name.”
Simms: “Alright, Brady.”
Caveman: “Tom Brady? It’s a bit of a cliché, isn’t it?”
Simms: “It’s about difference-makers. Who else am I going to put on the show?”
Caveman: “Oprah Winfrey.”
Simms: “Difference-makers in the NFL.”
Caveman: “Watch the tone, Phil, okay. You don’t want to get me all fired up right before I tee-off, believe me” (CBS, 2/4).

SPONSORS, SPONSORS EVERYWHERE: CBS’ four-hour Super Bowl pregame show featured several sponsored elements. Each hour of the show had a different sponsor, and there were two sponsors of the fourth hour. Dreamworks Pictures’ “Norbit,” Pizza Hut and State Farm were presenting sponsors of the first three hours, respectively. The first 30 minutes of the fourth and final hour was presented by GMC Sierra, and the second 30 minutes of the fourth was presented by SalesGenie.com. During the second hour sponsored by Pizza Hut, the set’s desk was covered with four of Pizza Hut’s Cheesy Bites Pizzas. CBS’ Boomer Esiason told CBS’ James Brown, “You always have food on these tables! What is going on here!? ... Nantz and Gumbel never had this much food around.” Later in the second hour, Esiason walked out to the crowd of onlookers and gave them pieces of the Cheesy Bites Pizza. As the first hour was sponsored by “Norbit,” actor Cuba Gooding Jr. introduced the teams and discussed the game while scenes from the movie played throughout the taped intro (CBS, 2/4).
