Newsmakers: Figure Skating Registers, But Just Barely

THE DAILY each Friday offers our take on the performances over the past week of some people and entities in sports business. Here are this week’s newsmakers.

WIN: OUTBACK CHAMPIONS SERIES -- The fledgling senior tennis circuit lands a major coup this week when PETE SAMPRAS announces he will play in at least two events this year, marking his first return to tournament competition since defeating ANDRE AGASSI in the U.S. Open final in ‘02.

Little Buzz Surrounding
Meissner’s Figure Skating Title
LOSE: REAL SALT LAKE -- County ends stadium talks with the MLS club, whose owner, DAVE CHECKETTS, is ready to shop the team to other markets. Columnist Lya Wodraska writes, “Thank you, [Salt Lake County Mayor PETER] CORROON. And to Checketts, next time you want to gamble, do it with your own money.” Then, Jazz Owner LARRY MILLER says Checketts pushed the rumors that he was interested in buying the soccer team, and lashes out, “He can spout off all he wants, but if he wants a deal like the one we got, he should have come to the table with the cash and plan that we did.”

DRAW: KIMMIE MEISSNER -- Wins the U.S. Figure Skating Championship and lands deals with Subway, Visa and Under Armour. But she’s competing in a sport that barely gets noticed. USA Today’s Christine Brennan, long a figure skating supporter, writes the sport has fallen into “a precipice few could have imagined.”
