NHLPA Reps Reject Saskin’s Plan To Hire Attorney For Union

NHLPA Reps Reject Saskin’s
Plan To Hire Attorney For Union
By Liz Mullen, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal

NHL players have stopped an attempt by NHLPA Exec Dir Ted Saskin to hire an independent attorney to represent the rights of the union itself while a second attorney conducts an investigation of Saskin’s hiring, among other things. In an e-mail sent to NHLPA player reps on Monday, Saskin asked that Toronto litigator Chris Palaire be hired to represent the NHLPA during the inquiry. The player reps voted on January 25 to hire Toronto litigator Sheila Block to investigate former NHLPA Exec Dir Bob Goodenow’s firing, Saskin’s employment and the negotiation of the CBA which ended the NHL lockout. “I was flattered to have been listed by Mr. Saskin as someone who could give advice to the NHLPA, but unfortunately I had a conflict, and so I was unable to take that retainer,” Palaire said in a voice mail message.

SASKIN’S REASONING: Sources said that Saskin gave the player reps a few days to respond to the e-mail before Palaire would be hired, but players rejected that plan. Saskin also stated in the e-mail that he had hired his own attorney, Earl Cherniak of Toronto, to represent him personally in the investigation and stated that he would cooperate fully with Block. But Saskin had argued that the union itself needed an attorney because the NHLPA could be in jeopardy of being sued, one source said. Saskin, in a statement e-mailed to SportsBusiness Journal, said, “The NHLPA is fully cooperating with the internal review and will not be making any public comment relating to the review until Sheila Block has issued her report.”
