Will NFL Allow N.Y.-Area Churches’ Super Bowl Parties?

Many Churches Screening “Power To Win” At Super Bowl Parties
|
Even after NFL attorneys earlier this week demanded an Indianapolis church cancel
its plans to host a Super Bowl party, “a number of [N.Y.-area] churches
and religious centers [are] hosting gatherings on Sunday,” according to
Herbert Lowe of NEWSDAY. Zion Cathedral Church of God in Christ in Freeport will
show the game on two ten-feet-by-ten-feet screens to 275-300 people. Also, Forest
Hills Jewish Center in Queens will show the game to 150 people on a 48-inch TV.
The NFL prohibits showing the game to mass audiences on a screen larger than 55
inches. Also, at many churches holding these events nationally, “Power to
Win,” a 20-minute video featuring Christian NFL players, will be shown at
halftime (NEWSDAY, 2/2). The NFL reportedly had an issue with the Indianapolis
church showing a video of Colts coach Tony Dungy and Bears coach Lovie Smith delivering
religious messages (THE DAILY).
CHURCH AND STATE: An INDIANAPOLIS STAR editorial states the NFL
“deserves a 15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct” for cancelling
Fall Creek Baptist Church’s Super Bowl party. The editorial: “It was
bad enough when NFL teams began holding cities hostage in demanding new stadiums.
Now the league wants to dictate to churches the content of their own halftime
shows” (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 2/2).
ODDS CHOICE: In West Palm Beach, Jeff Ostrowski notes although
the NFL “tries to keep a safe distance from gambling-related sponsors,”
the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood is sponsoring the South
Florida Super Bowl XLI Host Committee. But marketing materials list the Seminole
Tribe of Florida, not its casino, as a supporter. The casino hosted an official
opening ceremony Monday and is the site of Friday night’s NFL Alumni Player
of the Year awards show. Hotel & Casino President Mike Bloom said that the
host committee reps “visited months ago to verify that fans and players
could get to Hard Rock Live, the facility’s arena, without strolling past
slot machines” (PALM BEACH POST, 2/2).
