Red Sox GM THEO EPSTEIN’s father, LESLIE, confirmed that his son and MARIE WHITNEY, who pursued graduate studies at Harvard and has served as a volunteer at Horizons for Homeless Children, were married earlier this month. Theo Epstein was able to keep the wedding and honeymoon “a secret” from the media (BOSTON GLOBE, 1/31).

DE LA HOYA: OSCAR DE LA HOYA has hired FREDDIE ROACH as his trainer for his super welterweight title fight against FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. De La Hoya opted not to hire FLOYD MAYWEATHER SR. –- his trainer for his last eight bouts –-because he said that he was “not convinced the elder Mayweather could train him to fight against his son.” But Mayweather Sr. “insists the decision was made for financial reasons” and added that Golden Boy Promotions CEO RICHARD SCHAEFER “phoned him twice in recent weeks trying to convince him to take the job” (REVIEW-JOURNAL, 1/31).

SMITH: In a profile of former NFLer EMMITT SMITH, FORTUNE’s Roy Johnson writes Smith has “profited by buying and selling properties in and around Dallas and his hometown, Pensacola, [Florida], since he was a rookie.” Last year, Smith teamed with Pro Football HOFer ROGER STAUBACH, the Founder & CEO of Staubach Co., to form Smith/Cypress Partners LP, a real estate development enterprise “specializing in transforming underutilized parcels in densely populated areas into commercially viable properties anchored by national retail giants” (FORTUNE, 2/5 issue).

DUST COMMANDER: CONNIE PETERS, the daughter of ROBERT LEHMANN, the owner of ’70 Kentucky Derby champion DUST COMMANDER, is selling a copy of the winner’s trophy on eBay with a starting bid of $100,000. Kentucky Derby Museum Curator JAY FERGUSON said that it is “at least the third time he’s aware of that this trophy has been offered for sale, the most recent being last summer” (Louisville COURIER-JOURNAL, 1/31).

KLEIN: TV WEEK named Endeavor agent LANCE KLEIN one of its “12 to Watch.” Klein is the “quiet force that has been strategizing and brokering media deals for the UFC.” He also recently negotiated a deal with ABC to air “Shaq Attacks Obesity” featuring Heat C SHAQUILLE O’NEAL (TV WEEK, 1/29).

IN MEMORY: Former Trail Blazers GM STU INMAN died yesterday of an apparent heart attack. He was 80 (Portland OREGONIAN, 1/31).
