Charity Stripe: Broncos, NFLPA Combine Williams Funds

The Broncos have combined the Darrent Williams Children’s Fund, which was established this year to benefit the slain player’s two children in future educational and health needs, with a similar fund created by the NFLPA called the Darrent Williams Trust Fund. The NFLPA has made a donation to the fund and also will solicit support from all players and the public for contributions (Broncos). Contributions can be sent to:

WILLIAMS GRANT: The Broncos have established the Darrent Williams Memorial Grant, a $50,000 contribution to be matched by Morton Publishing Co.’s Doug Morton. The grant will be paid over five years to Denver’s Open Door Youth Gang Alternatives (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 1/30).

Lemieux Foundation License Plates
NOTES: Mario Lemieux Foundation specialty license plates will be available for Pennsylvania vehicles for $66. Sales of the plates will benefit medical research (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 1/31)....Cavaliers F LeBron James’ foundation hosted a celebrity roast of James Sunday night, with about 260 guests paying $1,000 apiece to attend. Boys Hope Girls Hope of Cleveland will receive 40% of the proceeds. Roasters included Cedric the Entertainer, Alex Thomas, Paul Rodriguez and Ralphie May (AP, 1/29)....Nike made special Kay Yow black high-top basketball shoes with pink laces to promote cancer awareness in the second annual Hoops for Hope Tournament last week. Yow, N.C. State’s women’s basketball coach, is a cancer survivor (“SportsCenter,” ESPN, 1/28)....The inaugural Cory Lidle Memorial Poker Tournament last Sunday raised $58,700 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Lidle was killed in a plane crash last October (MLB.com, 1/30).
