Leaving No Doubt? BCS Coordinator Says Changes Possible

BCS Coordinator Says Expansion
Of System A Possibility

BCS Coordinator and SEC Commissioner Mike Slive said that there “will be no pro-style playoff in college football,” though a “more limited expansion may be in the offing,” according to Chris Dufresne of the L.A. TIMES. Currently, “two models are being considered. The first would seed the top four teams in the BCS standings and match them in semifinal games in the bowls, and then have the two winners play about a week later for the national title.” The other plan would “involve going back to traditional bowl matchups,” and then choosing the top two teams after the four major bowls have been played. Slive said that any changes likely could not be implemented until after the current BCS deal expires after the ’09 season. Slive: “If anything changes, it will be at the end of the four-year period. There are just so many hurdles” (L.A. TIMES, 1/9). More Slive: “We’re not going to have an eight-game or a 16-team playoff. The question is, is a 1-versus-2 game enough?” (N.Y. TIMES, 1/9). He added, “Every conference has to decide for itself, what’s appropriate. Some are happy (now), others might want a different format. Everyone has to talk about the options. Then we’ll all get together and see what happens” (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 1/9).
