Contract Matters: Giants, Bonds Working To Finalize Language

Bonds Finalizing
Deal With Giants
The AP’s Janie McCauley reported the MLB Giants are still working with Jeff Borris, the agent for Barry Bonds, “to finalize complicated language” in Bonds’ one-year, $16M deal for next season. A source indicated that the language “still being negotiated concerns [Bonds’] compliance with team rules, as well as what would happen if he were to be indicted or have other legal troubles” (AP, 1/3). In Oakland, Andrew Baggarly notes the Giants increased their payroll by $10M to sign P Barry Zito, and GM Brian Sabean said that he “expects the team to budget about $95[M] for the foreseeable future.” Giants Managing Partner Peter Magowan said that increased revenues from MLBAM, the new MLB TV deal and MLB’s sale of the Expos/Nationals “allowed the club to boost its budget” (OAKLAND TRIBUNE, 1/4).

MAKING THE SAVE: The Nets traded G Jeff McInnis to the Bobcats yesterday for F Bernard Robinson, and in N.Y., John Eligon writes the Nets “wanted to make the trade to unload McInnis’s $3.6[M] contract so they could move under the NBA’s luxury-tax threshold” of $65.42M. With the dollar-for-dollar tax, the deal “is expected to save the Nets” about $5M. Robinson is making $1M this season (N.Y. TIMES, 1/4).

SUITE DEAL: In St. Louis, Derrick Goold reported P Jeff Suppan’s four-year, $42M deal with the Brewers includes a suite for games at Miller Park (POST-DISPATCH, 1/3).
