WNBA Sting Fold After Efforts To Keep Or Move Team Fail

The WNBA Sting is “disbanding and its players will be sent to other WNBA teams in an upcoming dispersal draft,” according to Steve Harrison of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Bobcats Sports & Entertainment last month announced it was relinquishing control of the team to the WNBA. The league had been trying to move the team to K.C., but “that has failed, at least in time for the 2007 season that begins in May.” Meanwhile, Charlotte-based sports marketing exec Cindy Sisson-Hensley said that she is “still trying to raise enough money to bring the team back” to Charlotte in ’08 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 1/4).

COMETS: Rockets & WNBA Comets CEO Tad Brown indicated that Owner Leslie Alexander has “entered into exclusive negotiations” to sell the Comets to Hilton Furniture & Mattress Co. President Hilton Koch and “expects something ‘more concrete in the next week to 10 days.’” Brown: “We’re very optimistic that the two main objectives Mr. Alexander had when he put the team up for sale –- that the team stayed here in Houston and that they had an opportunity to play in Toyota Center –- will be accomplished” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 1/4).
