NBC’s “SNF” Viewership Up 7% From ABC’s “MNF” In ’05

NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” finished its inaugural season averaging 17.5 million viewers, the best viewership number for the network primetime NFL package since ABC’s 18.5 million in ’00 and an increase of 1.2 million over ABC’s “MNF” in ’05, the lowest-rated “MNF” season of all time. NBC averaged an 11.0/18 Nielsen rating, up 2% from “MNF” last year (10.8/18). Through December 24, “SNF” drew 14% more average viewers than NFL coverage on CBS (17.5 million vs. 15.4 million), 5% more than Fox (16.7 million) and 42% more than ESPN (12.3 million) (THE DAILY).

SEASON FINALE: In Chicago, Phil Rosenthal writes the 13.4 million viewers for Packers-Bears “SNF” on New Year’s Eve marked NBC’s second-smallest audience of the season. NBC had picked the game for prime time, but the Packers were eliminated from playoff contention by the time the game was played (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 1/4). However, the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER’s Paul Gough reports the game was “the only Sunday primetime program — with the exception of the tail end of football games on CBS and Fox — that passed the 10 million viewer mark” or posted a rating above 3.0 in the adults 18-49 demo (HOLLYWOOD REPORTER, 1/4).
