Yankees Formally Announce Partnership With Mandalay Baseball
The Yankees have formally announced that they will “join forces with Mandalay Baseball Properties to operate” their Single-A New York-Penn League Staten Island affiliate, “offering several new perks to season-ticket holders in the process,” according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The press conference included Yankees GM Brian Cashman, President Randy Levine, General Partner Steve Swindal, Special Advisor Reggie Jackson, Mandalay Baseball Pro Teams President Jon Spoelstra and former Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari, who emceed the event. Levine: “There were serious mistakes made here by the previous management. ... We’re going to step in and deal with this with the intensity that we do with everything else.” Swindal said that the Yankees and Mandalay will “each have equity in the franchise, with Mandalay running the day-to-day operations.” Feinsand noted the Yankees are also “working on a similar arrangement” with the Triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barons (MLB.com, 11/9). Spoelstra said the goal is to sell “every seat for every game.” Spoelstra: “The usual turnaround is three or four years. ... In this situation, because it’s the Yankees, it might be more like two” (STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE, 11/10).
