Soccer Balls To Afghanistan, Iraq
MLS Galaxy MF Cobi Jones has become the spokesperson for “Little Feet, Big Goals,” a campaign to send soccer balls to children in Iraq and Afghanistan. Beginning on Monday, Sports Authority stores nationwide will feature Jones’ picture on displays asking customers to donate $10 (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 11/7)....Bears coach Lovie Smith, who has kids in the Lake Forest school system, “lent his support to a $54[M] school district building bond referendum Tuesday.” Smith taped a message encouraging people to vote “yes” and residents were called during last Sunday’s Dolphins-Bears game “so they could watch Smith on the sidelines while listening to him on the phone.” The referendum passed (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/9)....Arizona State Univ. baseball coach Pat Murphy is donating $100,000 to the school’s baseball program to fund the Tillman Room in honor of Pat and Kevin Tillman, who both attended the school and later served in the U.S. military. Pat was killed in Afghanistan in ‘04 (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 11/9).
