Sharks Find Unique Way To Increase Exposure To Fans

Sharks Look To Connect
With Fans Off The Ice |
The Sharks are taking a “retro-fitted and repainted” ‘88 Grumman Step Van to home
games, festivals, sporting events, restaurants, gas stations and stores in the
San Jose area to give out free ice cream to help “keep their city interested in
the team,” according to Jonathan Aicher of USA TODAY. Sharks Dir of Advertising
& Promotions Andrew Ebel said that the cost of “taking the truck out each time
is less than a television spot and also gives the Sharks more one-on-one time
with their fans.” Ebel: “We were trying to find different ways to keep our fans
engaged.” Aicher notes the team’s goal is to give out 65,000-80,000 ice cream
desserts this year. The Sharks also “plan to sell merchandise from the truck during
the winter, when ice cream might not be quite so popular.” The truck’s “geographical
limits are likely to expand” outside of the San Jose area “as the season gets
revved up” (USA
TODAY, 10/25).
