Garber Looks To Boost Canadian Players On Toronto FC Roster

MLS Commissioner Don Garber “revealed yesterday that rules will be applied to Toronto FC so that Canadians get a good portion of the roster spots when the team kicks off next spring,” according to Neil Stevens of the CP. While MLS’ 12 U.S.-based teams are “allowed to sign a maximum of four non-American players” to their 18-man rosters, Toronto FC will be allowed “four imports, and it will be allowed as many as three Americans on top of that if it so chooses.” Garber added that the team will choose players in an expansion draft late next month and will also get first pick in the January 12 entry draft. He noted there are Canadians playing for European teams and said, “We’ve got to find a way to get some of them home.” Meanwhile, Garber said that there “already have been ‘thousands’ of inquiries about season tickets” for Toronto FC (CP, 10/19).
