OLYMPIC: The USOC named TIM WOOD Dir of Security Operations. Wood served as a Special Agent in the U.S. Secret Service for over 21 years (USOC)....CHEN GANG, the former Dir of Beijing’s Urban Planning Commission, “will apparently take over from” Beijing Vice Mayor LIU ZHIHUA, who “headed the construction team” for the ’08 Olympics. Zhihua was “sacked for alleged corruption in June, but BOCOG officials insisted that Olympic projects were not affected by the scandal” (AROUND THE RINGS, 10/13 issue).

FRANCHISE: MLB Giants head athletic trainer STAN CONTE, whose subpoena in April “represented the first time a Giants employee other than a player had been dragged into the BALCO saga,” has stepped down after 15 years with the team. In S.F., Henry Schulman notes Conte “had disagreements with management, largely revolving around BARRY BONDS.” Conte in ’00 “wanted [Greg] Anderson and the rest of Bonds’ group banned from the clubhouse, but team executives would not do it.” However, Conte said that “none of that played into his decision to leave” (S.F.
