Ducks GM Brian Burke toured the Ford Center this week and said he would tell NHL
Commissioner Gary Bettman that the arena is “a major-league venue,” according
to Berry Tramel of the DAILY OKLAHOMAN. Burke was in Oklahoma City discussing
an affiliation with the CHL Blazers and said that the Ducks “are not considering
relocation.” Express Sports CEO Brad Lund, whose company owns the Blazers, said
that when Burke was asked if Oklahoma City is an NHL market, he “didn’t hesitate
to say absolutely.” Lund: “I think in general he was stunned with the quality
of the arena.” City officials said that if the NBA leaves the city, they “would
be interested in the NHL.” Ford Center GM Gary Desjardins: “The best prospects
right now are for the NBA. But you never want to shut the door on any possibility.”
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett added, “We’re open-minded.” (DAILY OKLAHOMAN,
9/8).
