Joe Maloof Says Kings May Look To Other Land Sites For Arena

While Sacramento Mayor Heather Fargo and “several other speakers”
at a news conference on Wednesday “praised the [NBA Kings] arena plan as
a potential catalyst for development,” team co-Owner Joe Maloof said that
the team “would look for other locations in Sacramento if the downtown site
proves too difficult to prepare in time,” according to Mary Lynne Vellinga
of the SACRAMENTO BEE. Maloof: “This site has been vacant for decades because
it’s such a difficult site to develop.” Later, seven arena opponents
said that Sacramento County “needs to spend more on schools, crime prevention,
flood protection and social services — not a sports arena.” Opponents
also “criticized the deal crafted by city and county negotiators as overly
generous to the Maloofs, with the public shouldering the entire cost of construction,”
estimated at $470-542M. The Maloofs have agreed to contribute $20M and pay an
average of $4M in rent for 30 years. Sacramento City Council member Steve Cohn,
an arena opponent, “seized on Maloof’s remark about putting the arena
somewhere” else. Cohn: “One of the main points proponents have made
is that this will really help downtown development” (SACRAMENTO BEE,
9/7).
