WTA Tour Will Continue Testing On-Court Coaching Next Year

WTA To Continue Experimenting
With On-Court Coaching
The Sony Ericsson WTA Tour will continue testing on-court coaching next year after drawing “mixed reviews from players” during trials at the Pilot Pen Tennis and the Rogers Cup, according to Liz Clarke of the WASHINGTON POST. WTA Tour Chair & CEO Larry Scott said that while fans and broadcasters “were intrigued” by the change, players “prefer limiting coaching opportunities to set breaks, medical timeouts and toilet breaks.” Clarke notes the women’s doubles “will likely adopt no-[advantage] scoring over three sets in the future,” something the ATP Tour has also adopted. The WTA also will add instant replay at tournaments in Beijing, Moscow and Madrid this season and adopt it for all Tier I events in ‘07 (WASHINGTON POST, 9/8). Scott said that the tour also will “institute a two-month off-season every year in November and December beginning in the next few years” in an attempt to decrease injuries (Newark STAR-LEDGER, 9/8).

OPEN SUCCESS: On Long Island, John Jeansonne writes the U.S. Open’s blue courts, which debuted last year, “really are functional and visually appealing.” The instant replay system, being used in its first Grand Slam, “has been a technological and entertainment success” (NEWSDAY, 9/8).
