Media Notes
The USTA has expanded its European TV partnership with Eurosport for an additional
six years through the 2012 U.S. Open. The extension includes both broadcast and
sublicensing rights within Eurosport’s territory of coverage, as well as online
rights in that region (USTA). SportsBusiness Journal’s Daniel Kaplan: “Overseas
rights bring in millions of dollars to the Open coffers, and Eurosport is one
of the bigger players, so this is not an incidental announcement” (THE DAILY).
DIAL TONE: FORBES’ Stephen Manes reviews a number of Mobile Virtual Network
Operators, including Mobile ESPN. Manes writes ESPN’s “basic interface is clever,
but I found lots of irritations, like live baseball line scores that don’t link
to the detailed box scores and play-by-play elsewhere. ... I particularly like
the ‘alerts’ feature that sends messages when the system finds something interesting
you have told it to watch out for, such as your favorite team’s scoring plays”
(FORBES, 9/18 issue).
