Dodgers Told Video-On-Demand Channel Not Within MLB Rules

MLB Says Dodgers’ VOD
Offering Violates League Rules
MLB officials have told the Dodgers their video-on-demand (VOD) channel, “Dodgers on Demand,” “does not comply with major league rules regarding new technologies,” according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. TIMES. The Dodgers and Time Warner Cable launched the channel last month, prompting MLB President & COO Bob DuPuy to send an e-mail “reminding teams they could not unilaterally award rights” for VOD. After reviewing the channel, MLB officials decided the team “violated a 2000 agreement under which the league, not individual teams, controlled ‘interactive media.’” The deal allows teams only “to authorize ‘one-way transmission of radio and television.’” MLBAM “has yet to determine a policy under which clubs can roll out VOD on cable and satellite systems.” FSN COO Randy Freer said, “We look forward to MLB making a decision so we can work with our teams to create value for consumers and distributors.” Shaikin notes the channel “remained on air Thursday.” When asked if the team would appeal the ruling and how the team defined “interactive media,” Dodgers Senior VP/Communications Camille Johnston “issued a statement that did not answer those questions” (L.A. TIMES, 9/8).
