Molson Pulls Title Sponsorship Of Toronto Grand Prix
Molson is “pulling its title sponsorship” of the Champ Car World Series’ Toronto
Grand Prix after a 21-year relationship, according to Dean McNulty of the TORONTO
SUN. Molson had been the owner and promoter of the event until this past season
when it “sold its interest and assets” in the street race to Champ Car, which
acquired the property amid speculation that Molson “might bring in the rival [IRL]
to Toronto.” Molson Manager of Brand Communications Cynthea Galbraith indicated
that the company will continue to be part of the race, “but only as the official
beer supplier.” McNulty notes while attendance has “stagnated over the past several
seasons the Grand Prix has been, and was again this year, the best attended single
sports event in all of Ontario.” Toronto Grand Prix President & CEO Charlie Johnstone
said, “We were prepared for [Molson’s move] and we already are working with several
organizations that are interested in assuming the role of title or presenting
sponsors for the 2007 race” (TORONTO SUN, 9/8). Molson ended its title
sponsorship of Champ Car’s Grand Prix of Montreal after last year’s race (THE
DAILY).
