China Looking To Name Olympic Rower Through Reality TV Show

Chinese Reality Show To Offer
Olympic Rowing Position
China Central Television (CCTV) is launching a new reality show in mid-November called the “China Olympic Coxswain Competition,” which will select one male and one female to compete on China’s rowing team at the ’08 Beijing Games, according to Mei Fong of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. Twenty finalists “will be voted off by a set of judges and the audience in weekly televised trials that will test their stamina, leadership skills as well as their ability to withstand stress.” China’s Olympic organizers are “emphasizing the theme that sports can be for all,” and are also “eager to increase the visibility of the country’s less-popular sports.” CCTV is not disclosing the name of the show’s sponsor, but sources said that it is “likely to be one of the major Chinese sponsors” of the ’08 Games, such as TOP sponsor Lenovo or China Netcom Group. Taihe Media Investment Co., which is producing the show, “values the exclusive sponsorship of the competition at more than” $10M. China has not won an Olympic rowing medal since ’96 (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 8/29).
