Atlanta Loses LPGA Event Due To Lack Of Title Sponsor

For the first time since ’91, the LPGA will not have a stop in Atlanta, as the Charity Championship hosted by Nancy Lopez at Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge “has been cancelled” due to the lack of a title sponsor, according to Stan Awtrey of the ATLANTA CONSTITUTION. Last year’s event did not have a title sponsor until two weeks before it started, when Florida’s Natural signed on, although there was no TV coverage. Even though last year’s tournament “was a success, [Florida’s Natural] couldn’t squeeze enough marketing money free to enable its return.” Chick-fil-A sponsored the event from ’95-’05 but “pulled its money out of the golf tournament and threw it into” its college football bowl sponsorship (AJC.com, 8/28).
