Board Meeting: Dew Tour To Discuss Adding Female Events

Alliance Trying To Add Women’s
Events To Dew Action Sports Tour
|
The Dew Action Sports Tour currently features male-only skateboard, BMX and motocross
events, and the Action Sports Alliance (ASA) “plans to discuss the issue with
Dew tour organizers later this year,” according to Boaz Herzog of the Portland
OREGONIAN. Dew Tour GM Wade Martin said adding female events “makes a lot of sense.
It’s just a matter of when is the right time to take that on.” Herzog wrote women’s
action sports “have long been overshadowed by their male counterparts, both in
exposure and prize money.” However, the ASA is enjoying a “newfound prominence”
after leveraging a meeting with ESPN execs prior to this year’s X Games 12 into
a boost in prize money and a “commitment of half an hour of [TV] coverage at next
year’s event.” Martin said, “You have to be smart about how much you take on at
once. When, and if, we add women disciplines, we need to do it right with full-fledged
competitions and provide appropriate prize money and exposure. We don’t have the
wherewithal to do that just now. Our goal is creating the first pro action sports
tour for men, and that’s enough to bite off right now” (Portland
OREGONIAN, 8/20).
