Owens Selling $34 Popcorn On Web Site

Cowboys WR Terrell Owens has “wasted little time in trying to tap into marketing
potential that exists with a signature franchise,” according to Jarrett
Bell of USA TODAY. Owens is selling bags of “exotic” popcorn for $34,
T.O. wristbands, a No. 81 Cowboys throwback jersey and MP3 ringtones, among other
items, at TerrellOwens.com. Owens’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said, “The
Cowboys are brilliant when it comes to marketing their brand. Terrell will be
able to help himself in that capacity.” But some marketing experts said
that as a “national pitchman ... Owens is limited because of the controversy-marred
career.” Milwaukee-based Sports Marketing & Management Group President
Joe Sweeney: “A lot of companies wouldn’t want him near their product.”
Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones said that he “doesn’t consider the attention
Owens might generate as a negative if it doesn’t interfere with the mission
to win games.” Jones: “I sure do not create ‘takeaways’
from individuals that have a flair for marketing. I couldn’t look in the
mirror if I did that” (USA
TODAY, 8/11).
