Milwaukee Mile To Follow Indy 500 For First Time Since ’95
The Milwaukee Mile will “return to tradition next spring, hosting the drivers
and teams of the Indianapolis 500 in the following weekend,” according to Dave
Kallmann of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL. For all but five seasons, from ’37-95,
Milwaukee followed the Indy 500 on the AAA, USAC and CART schedules, but track
management “stayed loyal to CART” when Tony George formed the IRL in ’96. The
early June date “stayed with CART and its successor, Champ Car, even when the
IRL began coming to the Mile” in ’04. Now, with “contractual obligations on both
sides concluded the Mile’s to Champ Car and the IRL’s to Texas Motor Speedway
the series and track are free to resume the Indy-to-Milwaukee tradition.”
Following the Indy 500 will be a promotional benefit to the Mile, “which will
be able to piggyback on the attention generated” by Indy. Last year, the Mile
“found itself hamstrung when it could not quickly capitalize on the newfound popularity
of [IRL driver] Danica Patrick because it was trying to sell Champ Car tickets
at the time.” Champ Car “is not expected to return to the Mile” in ’07 (MILWAUKEE
JOURNAL SENTINEL, 8/9).
