WORLD CUP: ABC’s coverage of U.S.-Italy was the highest-rated World Cup game since a 5.7/16 for the Brazil-France Championship in ’98. Coverage was up 300% from a 1.1/3 for the comparable U.S.-Poland game in ’02, which was the U.S.’ third game but aired as a replay on a Saturday. Univision earned a 1.7/6 Nielsen rating for coverage of U.S.-Italy. The game delivered 3,027,000 viewers, up 247.4% from 870,000 viewers for the comparable U.S.-Korea game in ’02 and up 89.3% from 1,599,000 viewers for the comparable U.S.-Iran game in ’98. U.S.-Italy was the second-highest rated of the weekend for Univision, trailing Sunday’s Brazil-Australia game which posted a 2.2/6. Univision’s total World Cup coverage is averaging 2,031,000 viewers, up 150.1% from 812,000 for the comparable period in ’02 and up 86.0% from 1,092,000 in ’98 (THE DAILY). TSN and Rogers Sportsnet are averaging 437,000 viewers per game for World Cup coverage, an increase of 59% from an average of 274,000 through the same period during the ’98 event, the last time it was in Europe (TORONTO STAR, 6/22).
