NBC gets best Summer Olympic night since 1996 for Phelps' record

NBC is averaging a 19.5 rating and 35.6 million viewers through the first five nights of taped competition from the London Games, up 10 percent and 14 percent, respectively, from a 17.8 rating and 31.3 million viewers through the same period during Beijing in 2008 (see chart).

The network finished with a 21.8 rating and 38.7 million viewers for Tuesday night’s telecast, marking the highest-rated night of any Summer Olympics since Atlanta in 1996. The 19.5 rating is also the best Tuesday night prime-time rating on any network since Feb. 19 during the 2002 Salt Lake City Games.
