Rudolph aligns with agent with a history of strong QB classes

O
klahoma State’s Mason Rudolph, one of the top quarterbacks in a draft full of strong QBs, has selected agent and attorney Tim Younger and pioneer sports agent Marvin Demoff to co-represent him.

Younger owns Younger & Associates and counts Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr among his clients. He also co-represents a few players, including five-time Pro Bowl Atlanta Falcons center Alex Mack with Demoff.

“I enjoy working with Marvin and that is the reason he is part of this,” Younger said of the co-representation of Rudolph. “But candidly, Marvin can bring something to the table that a lot of folks can’t. His relationships with owners and the respect that he has with general managers — you can’t match that.”

Demoff started representing players in 1975 and has represented several hall of famers, including Dan Marino, John Elway and the late Junior Seau. Demoff’s son, Kevin Demoff, is COO of the Los Angeles Rams.

“Tim asked me if I would work with him and I said, ‘Yes,’” Marvin Demoff said. “It’s as simple as that.”

Rudolph is part of what agents and NFL talent evaluators say might be the best class for quarterbacks in years and that four or more players at the position could be taken in the first round. Last week, CBS Sports NFL draft analyst Chris Trapasso had Rudolph ranked No. 10, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson No. 12, UCLA’s Josh Rosen No. 17 and USC’s Sam Darnold No. 22 on his first-round mock draft.

Not all analysts see it that way. Rob Rang, senior draft analyst for NFL Draft Scout, has the quarterbacks ranked in this order, from first to last: Darnold, Rosen, University of Wyoming’s Josh Allen, Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield, Jackson and then Rudolph. Rang has Darnold, Rosen, Allen and Mayfield going in the first round, with Jackson being a first- or second-round pick and Rudolph a second rounder.

At 6-foot-5, Rudolph has a “prototypical” NFL quarterback size and arm, and he amassed great statistics in college, but he’s hurt by the fact he didn’t play in a pro-style offense, Rang said. However, Rudolph has a chance to boost his draft status by playing in the Senior Bowl, Rang said.

This is not Demoff’s first rodeo in a quarterback-rich NFL draft.

Demoff represented both Elway and Marino in the 1983 NFL draft, in which Elway was picked No. 1 by the Baltimore Colts (and later traded to the Denver Broncos) and Marino was picked No. 27 by the Miami Dolphins. There were six quarterbacks taken in the first round of that draft, which at the time had 28 teams — Todd Blackledge was taken seventh by the Kansas City Chiefs, Jim Kelly 14th by the Buffalo Bills, Tony Eason 15th by the New England Patriots and Ken O’Brien 24th by the New York Jets. Demoff’s work in the 1983 draft was featured in ESPN Films’ 30 For 30 documentary, “Elway to Marino,” in 2013.

Younger would not speculate on where Rudolph ranks among quarterbacks this year, saying it’s not wise to make such projections. “I would say it’s a great quarterback class,” he said. “I think the NFL believes it’s a great quarterback class and when you have a guy like Mason who has that many starts, that much experience, that is something that is going to be valued and prized by general managers.”

Rudolph started at quarterback for four years, set 52 college records and won many awards, including the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award given to the top senior quarterback in college football. He also was named MVP of the Camping World Bowl in which he led the Cowboys to a 30-21 victory over Virginia Tech.
