Fanatics still has online Team USA store after Alibaba deal with IOC

Fanatics will continue to operate Team USA’s online store for now despite the International Olympic Committee’s new global partnership with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group.

Fanatics operates Teamusashop.com and has U.S. Olympic Committee rights through 2020 as the preferred e-commerce service hosting online stores. Alibaba invested in Fanatics in 2014.

As part of Alibaba’s IOC deal, it will build a global digital sales platform, finally allowing cross-border sales of licensed goods for national Olympic committees, Games hosting committees, the IOC and possibly sponsors. When asked whether the Fanatics-run Team USA Shop would survive alongside the Alibaba platform, USOC CMO Lisa Baird said, “I would assume we’d figure that out. Not every detail is figured out yet.”

Fanatics declined to comment. An IOC spokesman said work will begin in the coming months to figure out details.
