On-air panelists offer reasons for NFL ratings dip

The most popular sports media topic this fall has to do with the NFL’s decline in TV ratings. Everyone seems to have a different opinion on why they are down. The on-air panelists at the University of Maryland’s Shirley Povich Symposium were no different. Here are their answers:

“To me, it’s very simple. If you build it, they will come. If you show good games, if you show compelling matchups …”

Andrea Kremer, chief correspondent, NFL Network

“The NFL’s ratings are directly tied to the fact that they don’t have very good quarterbacks leaguewide right now. They’re in a transition year.”
David Aldridge, reporter, Turner Sports

“I would say that the refs are beginning to take over the game.”
Maury Povich, host, “The Maury Show”

“You cannot continue to have touchdown, extra point, commercial, kickoff, commercial. It makes the live viewing experience impossible and it’s why nobody watches anything but the Red Zone.”
Scott Van Pelt, anchor, ESPN

“We’re more than halfway into the season, and there’s an elevated level of interest now because every game has that much more meaning.”
Jimmy Roberts, reporter, NBC Sports
