ANAHEIM
Commission OKs project near stadium

The Anaheim Planning Commission approved plans to allow Hong Kong-based LT Global Investment to build a $450 million mixed-use project across from Angel Stadium, according to an Orange County Register report. Plans call for condos, apartments, hotels, retail and office space. A Los Angeles Angels attorney sent a letter to the city, saying the project is ill-advised.

BAM Tech gets minority

stake in Silver Chalice

    BAM Tech acquired a minority stake in Silver Chalice Ventures, MLBAM’s existing partner in the 120 Sports venture. As part of a broad-based digital rights and technology partnership, BAM Tech will provide the tech infrastructure for Silver Chalice’s Campus Insiders and ACC Digital Network. It also will gain an undisclosed stake in Silver Chalice, formed in 2009 by the Chicago White Sox, with an option to expand its equity position.
    This is the first time Silver Chalice has taken on outside investment. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal follows the recent announcement of 120 Sports moving its morning show, “The Morning Run,” from Chicago to MLBAM’s New York City headquarters, where BAM Tech also is based.

ATLANTA
Arena conflicts move WNBA team out

The Atlanta Dream will play at the 8,600-seat Hank McCamish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech for the 2017 and 2018 WNBA seasons while Philips Arena undergoes renovations. Any 2016 home playoff contests hosted by the Dream also will be held at McCamish Pavilion, as Philips has multiple conflicting events during the majority of the playoff schedule.

Hawks get to work on training center
The Atlanta Hawks and Emory Healthcare began demolition on the future site of the Emory Sports Medicine Complex, their 90,000-square-foot training and sports medicine center. The privately funded complex is being designed by HOK. The complex is scheduled to open before the 2017-18 season.

BOSTON
BC joins ACC teams under StubHub

StubHub signed a multiyear agreement with Boston College to become the official ticket marketplace of its athletic programs. The agreement is in partnership with Spectra Ticketing & Fan Engagement and the school’s multimedia rights partner, Fenway Sports Management. The partnership marks StubHub’s eighth property in the ACC.

CHARLOTTE
Driver, CMS partner for college discount

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Chase Elliott and Charlotte Motor Speedway are partnering on a promotion to draw college students to the Bank of America 500, according to a Charlotte Observer report. The Chase University promotion will offer discounted tickets ($24, symbolic of Elliot’s car number) to the Oct. 8 race to students with valid college IDs.

ELMONT, N.Y.
Tracks to use VenueNext mobile tech

The NYRA signed a deal with VenueNext to integrate its mobile technology platform at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course. Starting in the spring of 2017, a new mobile app will allow patrons to buy tickets, place bets and order food, drink and merchandise. The initial rollout is set for Belmont Park, with Saratoga coming online later in the season.

FORT WORTH, TEXAS
Armed Forces Bowl signs local sponsor

Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet signed a multiyear agreement to become an official sponsor of the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl. Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet has been family owned and operated in Fort Worth since 1922. The dealership’s namesake, Bruce Lowrie, flew 26 missions as a navigator on a B-17 bomber in the 92nd Bomb Wing during World War II.

LOS ANGELES
MLS stadium breaks ground

A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the new stadium for MLS expansion club LAFC. Designed by the local architecture firm Gensler, the 22,000-seat stadium project in L.A.’s Exposition Park also includes a 140,000-square-foot complex of office space, restaurants and a soccer museum. The team also reached a 15-year stadium naming-rights deal with Banc of California. The bank changed its name from Pacific Trust to Banc of California in 2013.

MEMPHIS
Grizzlies, arena sign official bank

The Memphis Grizzlies and Pinnacle Financial Partners established a new multiyear partnership, making Pinnacle the official bank of the team and FedEx Forum. The partnership will introduce Grizzlies Banking, which includes a dedicated product suite of co-branded debit and credit cards offered by Pinnacle.

MIAMI
Speedway signs Dade Paper

Dade Paper was named as a preferred partner of Homestead-Miami Speedway. This includes a major presence during Ford Championship Weekend (Nov. 18-20). In addition, Dade paper will be a primary supplier of Homestead-Miami Speedway’s janitorial supplies.

MILWAUKEE
Bucks skywalk gets initial approval

A skywalk that will connect the future Milwaukee Bucks arena to its parking structure received preliminary city approval, according to a Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel report. The council committee is to review the proposal at its Sept. 7 meeting.

PHILADELPHIA
Union Fan Council begins meeting

The Philadelphia Union selected 26 people to serve on the inaugural Union Fan Council. The council has held one meeting at Talen Energy Stadium, and is expected to meet regularly throughout the year. The members have all committed to a minimum 12-month term. They are required to attend six to eight meetings per year to remain with the council.

Sixers named in ‘Best Places to Work’
The Philadelphia 76ers were recognized for the second consecutive year as one of the “Best Places to Work” in Philadelphia by the Philadelphia Business Journal. The Sixers attribute the honor to the organization’s vibrant corporate culture and employee growth programs, drive to innovate and collaborate, and commitment to serve the community.

Sixers’ new facility not quite ready
With the team’s new training facility and headquarters under construction in Camden, N.J., not yet finished, the 76ers once again will hold their preseason training camp at Stockton University in Galloway Township, N.J. Team officials said the $75 million complex should be ready in late September.

Fans receive Kalas replica statues
The Philadelphia Phillies gave out Harry Kalas replica statutes to all fans at the team’s Aug. 20 game against the St. Louis Cardinals. The statute of the team’s late Hall of Fame broadcaster is a miniature version of the statue of Kalas installed outside Citizens Bank Park that was sculpted by artist Lawrence Nowlan.

STARKVILLE, MISS.
Big baseball display planned

Daktronics will design, manufacture and install the largest LED video display in college baseball for Mississippi State University. The display at Dudy Noble Field, Polk-DeMent Stadium, will measure 43 feet high by 60 feet wide for a total of nearly 2,600 square feet.

Rays freeze prices with ‘Double Play’

The Tampa Bay Rays introduced the Double Play Renewal opportunity, a plan that enables current season-ticket holders the ability to freeze their ticket prices for the 2017 and 2018 seasons at 2016 prices. Those who renew or purchase full-season tickets for 2017 and 2018 also will have greater access to Rays players, choose from unique gift opportunities and double their Rays Rewards points.

STMA marks 23 years at LLWS

Sports Turf Managers Association, the professional organization for 2,600 men and women who manage sports fields worldwide, celebrated its 23rd anniversary of volunteering as the grounds crew for the Little League World Series this month in Williamsport, Pa. Rob Guthrie, turf and groundskeeper at Little League International, led 33 volunteers from nine states in preparing and managing the playing surfaces at the 88-acre complex.

Ironman adds three 70.3

events to China calendar

   Ironman announced the addition of three new Ironman 70.3 triathlons to take place in China next year. The new events include Ironman 70.3 Liuzhou (April 1), Ironman 70.3 Qujing (May 28) and Ironman 70.3 Chongqing (Sept. 24).
   With inaugural events in Hefei and Xiamen this year, China will now have five Ironman 70.3 events taking place throughout the country during the 2016-17 season. “The development of races in China continues to be a priority for us, and Liuzhou, Qujing and Chongqing will provide three new fantastic race locations for our athletes,” said Ironman CEO Andrew Messick.

Snipers gather for competition

Forty-two snipers from 15 countries gathered last week in Beijing to take part in a sniping competition with the goal of enhancing military cooperation and combating terrorism, according to a Xinhua report. The four-day event, the first of its kind hosted by the Chinese armed police force, featured three categories: individual sniping, group sniping and comprehensive sniping.

Raiders extend Huawei deal

National Rugby League side Canberra Raiders sponsor Huawei extended its major sponsorship of the club for a further three seasons until the end of 2019. Telecom equipment company Huawei joined the Raiders as major sponsor in 2012 and is one of the longest-running major sponsors in the NRL.

DOHA, QATAR
UCI finale flying with Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways was named the official airline sponsor of Doha 2016 — the UCI Road World Championships. The Oct. 9-16 event will see 1,000 racers from 75 countries compete for the title. Qatar Airlines will fly competitors to take part in the event, while Qatar Airways Cargo will transport hundreds of high-performance road bikes to Doha.

New Era creates line for Chivas
New Era Cap reached partnership with Club Deportivo Guadalajara, popularly known as Chivas, the soccer club with the biggest Mexican fan base in the world. The first line of headwear was launched this month in Mexico to celebrate 110 years of team history.

Former Nielsen staffers start agency

Three Nielsen Sports employees — Philipp Kupfer, Kai Lafrenz and Andreas Ullmann — left the company to found a new startup, according to a Sponsors report. The new agency, based in Hamburg, is called The Sports People. The three will function as the company’s managing directors.

LONDON
Fulham FC keeps Florida ties

Visit Florida’s logo remains emblazoned for a second season across the front of uniforms for Championship side Fulham FC, according to a News Service of Florida report. The one-year renewal was priced at $1.25 million. Club owner Shahid Khan also owns the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Hammers on holiday with Ocean
West Ham United named Ocean Holidays as its official travel supplier. The three-year deal will see Ocean Holidays offer travel deals to fans, players and staff across the Premier League club’s social media channels, official website and match-day program.

West Ham signs African deal
West Ham signed a long-term agreement with Capital Oil and Gas Industries Ltd., the principal investor in Nigerian Professional Football League side FC Ifeanyi Ubah. Its first official partnership in Africa will provide Capital Oil and Gas with a range of rights to promote the business through the football club.

MANCHESTER
Man City partners with Indian network

Manchester City reached a new partnership with VEQTA, India’s only digital broadcast network dedicated to sports. The deal, which is the first of its kind for a Premier League club, will give Indian fans the opportunity to watch exclusive content.
