USA Diving plans Rio sendoff

USA Diving selected Atlanta to host its official team sendoff for the 2016 Olympic Games. The event will take place July 19-23 at the Coach Herb McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech. Team USA will hold open practices, participate in team building exercises and visit local children’s hospitals.

BUFFALO
Sabres, MSG Networks reach deal

MSG Networks and Pegula Sports and Entertainment agreed to a new, long-term rights deal for Buffalo Sabres games along with a comprehensive programming partnership that includes content relating to other Pegula Sports and Entertainment properties, such as the Buffalo Bills.

CLEVELAND
Cavs, Warriors open community centers

The NBA, Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors dedicated NBA Cares facilities in the respective cities of the NBA Finals contenders earlier this month. The league and the Cavaliers, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente and State Farm, opened the NBA Cares Learn & Play Center at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cleveland at John Adams Club on June 9. Six days prior, Warriors guard Klay Thompson, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf helped cut the ribbon on an NBA Cares Learn & Play Zone at East Oakland Pride Elementary School (see below photo). More than 1,000 live, learn or play spaces have been created by the NBA family.

 
DENVER
Soccer finales to boost economy

US Club Soccer, a member of the U.S. Soccer Federation, estimates an economic impact of $4.2 million from the 2016 National Cup XV Finals and National Premier Leagues NPL Finals at Aurora Sports Park in July. The July 14-18 events will feature U-13 through U-18 boys and girls league champions from around the country.

DES MOINES, IOWA
Tourney sets attendance record

The Principal Charity Classic presented by Wells Fargo, the annual PGA Tour Champions stop in Des Moines, saw a record attendance of 83,389 at Wakonda Club from June 3-5. The event has raised approximately $8 million for Iowa children’s charities since 2007 and is expected to near $10 million when final proceeds are announced for 2016.

LOS ANGELES
Rams, ESPN Radio sign 5-year deal

The Los Angeles Rams reached a five-year deal with ESPN Radio 710 L.A. making it the team’s flagship radio partner. The agreement includes preseason, regular-season and playoff games.

Galaxy highlights water conservation
The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the LA Galaxy plan to work together starting next month to encourage fans and residents to promote the water conservation efforts of the new H2Love outreach campaign. H2Love will use digital and social media both in and outside StubHub Center and a display booth at select home games to promote awareness.

Wildcats to have big corner display

Kansas State University has tabbed Daktronics to design, manufacture and install a new LED video display for the northeast corner of Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium as well as field-level entrance ribbons. The new display will measure approximately 38 feet high by 67 feet wide.

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL
U.S. Bank Stadium handed over to Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings and the state of Minnesota on June 17 took control of the new U.S. Bank Stadium from Mortenson Construction, six weeks ahead of a July 29 deadline. Mortenson and Thor Construction delivered a key to the downtown Minneapolis stadium to Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority members and the Minnesota Vikings. The $1.1 billion project started in December 2013.

PHILADELPHIA
Phillies auction raises $700K for ALS

The Phillies Phestival, an annual autograph and auction party, raised $718,689 to provide patient care and services for ALS patients in the Philadelphia area. Since the Philadelphia Phillies adopted ALS as their primary charity in 1984, the team has raised $17 million for the fight against the disease.

Penn signs Spectra Ticketing
Spectra Ticketing & Fan Engagement, a division of Comcast Spectacor, reached a long-term agreement to provide its technology for event ticketing and marketing to the University of Pennsylvania. Penn Athletics is the first Ivy League institution for which Philadelphia-based Spectra will provide ticketing services.

SAN DIEGO
Tourism group to study Chargers proposal

The San Diego Tourism Marketing District last week agreed to spend $30,000 on a study that will attempt to analyze what benefits, if any, would accrue from a multipurpose complex that has been proposed by the San Diego Chargers, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report. The study is expected to be completed by the end of this month or early July.

SONOMA, CALIF.
Honda signs 3-year race agreement

Honda and Sonoma Raceway signed a three-year agreement to make the automaker the official vehicle of the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma Verizon IndyCar Series event through 2018. Honda will provide the raceway with vehicles for pre-race ceremonies and driver introductions and will host an interactive display in the facility’s main paddock during race weekend.

TAMPA-ST. PETERSBURG
Daktronics adding 39,000 square feet

Raymond James Stadium this fall will feature one of the newest LED video display systems in the NFL, designed and manufactured by Daktronics. The installation of 14 displays totaling more than 39,000 square feet will take place this summer, ahead of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 2016 season. Two new main video displays, one above each end zone, will measure 60 feet high by 160 feet wide. Four tower displays also will be installed, one in each corner of the stadium.

Team renews with betting partner

Bundesliga club FC Schalke 04 renewed its sponsorship deal with betting provider bet-at-home.com. The company signed a new two-year deal with the club, extending until 2018. Bet-at-home.com has been a partner of the team since 2011.

LE MANS, FRANCE
Ford sent 700 to Le Mans race

Ford had about 700 guests at the recent FIA World Endurance Championship 24 Hours of Le Mans, including many of its top executives. The automaker announced at last year’s event that it would return to this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans with Chip Ganassi Racing for the first time since it won the event in 1966.

MUNICH
New broadcast center planned

German pay-TV broadcaster Sky Deutschland plans to build a sports programming broadcast center next to its corporate headquarters near Munich, according to a Broadband TV News report. The project, dubbed The Cube, calls for two studios as well as an additional new area for Bundesliga coverage.

READING, ENGLAND
Carabao becomes principal partner

League Championship club Reading FC agreed to a new three-year sponsorship with Carabao, according to a Get Reading report. The Southeast Asian energy drink brand was the club’s home shirt sponsor last season. It’s now the principal partner of the club.

SYDNEY
HSBC renews with Rugby Union

The Australian Rugby Union secured a major financial coup with HSBC renewing its deal as the group’s banking partner until the end of the 2019 World Cup, according to a (Sydney) Daily Telegraph report. The Wallabies also have sponsorship deals with Qantas and BMW.

TURIN, ITALY
IMG to represent Juventus in Asia

IMG agreed to an exclusive, multiyear licensing deal with Juventus FC to represent the club in Japan, China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, in addition to Australia and New Zealand.
