Mayne looks to Texas as four-year run at MetLife Stadium nears end

Mayne
Brad Mayne will still have a busy summer at MetLife Stadium, but things may quiet down for him after that.

Mayne stepped down last week as president and CEO of the stadium, a decision that comes as he nears the end of the four-year contract he signed in August 2012.

Ron VanDeVeen, most recently MetLife Stadium’s senior vice president of events and guest services, will take over the top job at the NFL’s only two-team building. VanDeVeen has spent his entire 26-year career working at the Meadowlands.

As Mayne finishes the term of his agreement, he will spend the next five months as a consultant to help VanDeVeen make the transition to his new role. The facility has a busy non-football schedule, starting with Monster Jam and Monster Energy Supercross this month, before summer kicks in with international soccer, including Copa America Centenario’s final match, plus concert tours by Coldplay, Guns N’ Roses and Kenny Chesney.

It’s not the first time Mayne has been a consultant. While president and CEO of the American Airlines Center in Dallas from 1998 to 2012, Mayne served as an independent arbiter for issues tied to construction and financing at Lucas Oil Stadium; Gila River Arena, then known as Glendale Arena; and a group of public facilities in Milwaukee.

Mayne declined an option to renew his contract in New Jersey for the opportunity to be closer to his family in Texas.
“Eight of my nine grandchildren live in Dallas,” he said. “If further opportunities come up in the industry, I will take a look. I’ve put my home up for sale in New Jersey and I still have a home in Dallas [occupied] by one of my daughters.”

As he looks back on his tenure at MetLife Stadium, the 2014 Super Bowl stands out as a special memory for Mayne. Considering the risks taken by the NFL to stage its biggest event outdoors in a cold-weather climate for the first time, he’s proud of the role his staff played in event operations.

“It was the first Super Bowl where the NFL allowed [the facility’s] staff to do most of the work from a stadium standpoint,” Mayne said. “It was also the first Super Bowl to have two states involved at the same time in New York and New Jersey. We were also in charge of snow removal and cleaned up the next day after the storm [that began the day after the game]. The league trusted us to do that as well.”

The game produced a Super Bowl record per cap of $94.60 on food and drink served by Delaware North Sportservice, MetLife Stadium’s concessionaire.
