HarborCenter nabs championship

College Hockey America is bringing its 2016 women’s championship tournament to Buffalo. Semifinal and final games will be at HarborCenter March 4-5. It marks the first time that the league, made up of Mercyhurst, Syracuse, Penn State, Robert Morris, RIT and Lindenwood, will play the playoff at a neutral site.

CARY, N.C.
College Cup moves from Orlando

The 2016 Women’s College Cup will move from Orlando to Cary, N.C., because of construction delays at Orlando City SC’s stadium. The event will be played Dec. 2-4 at WakeMed Soccer Park. This will mark the eighth time that Cary has hosted the Women’s College Cup.

DETROIT
Hotel part of Red Wings’ mixed-use plan

A new hotel and about 150 residential units are part of $196 million in planned development that aims to be up and running when the new Detroit Red Wings arena debuts in September 2017, according to a Detroit News report. Olympia Development released updated details and renderings of its upscale vision surrounding the future home of the team.

FAYETTEVILLE, ARK.
New displays set for four venues

The University of Arkansas picked Daktronics to bring 11 new LED video displays to four venues on campus. Installation began in September at Bud Walton Arena and will finish up with the other three facilities early in 2016, including the largest display in college baseball at Baum Stadium.

JACKSONVILLE
Jaguars detail ticket pricing

Renderings of EverBank Field’s current renovation were unveiled at the Jacksonville Jaguars’ State of the Franchise presentation Jan. 29, and the team hopes it will persuade more fans to buy pricier club-seat tickets, according to a Florida Times-Union report. Jaguars President Mark Lamping said that the overall average ticket price will go up 3.6 percent this year, while 5 percent of seats will decrease in average price and 10 percent will have no change.

LAS VEGAS
Stadium price tag at $1.2 billion

A domed stadium proposed for the UNLV football team has a price tag of $1.2 billion, and developers would seek $780 million in public financing, according to a Las Vegas Review-Journal report. A document provided by Las Vegas Sands Corp., which is leading a consortium behind the project, showed that private investors would contribute $420 million toward the planned 65,000-seat stadium, which would house the university’s football team and possibly an NFL franchise.

LOUISVILLE, KY.
Artist adds color to Derby, Oaks

Renowned graphic artist John Mattos created officially licensed artwork for Churchill Downs Racetrack’s 2016 “Art of the Kentucky Derby” series. The images will adorn prints, posters and other merchandise, and also is featured on tickets for seating and souvenir racing programs for the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks.

MILWAUKEE
Bucks select practice facility builder

The Milwaukee Bucks awarded J.P. Cullen & Sons the role of general contractor on the team’s new downtown practice facility, which is estimated to cost $25 million to $30 million. The Bucks selected Janesville, Wis.-based Cullen after reviewing proposals from 15 prospective contractors, more than half of whom Bucks representatives interviewed.

Onexim completes Nets equity purchase

Nets Sports & Entertainment completed the sale of its equity interests in the Brooklyn Nets and Barclays Center to Mikhail Prokhorov’s Onexim Sports & Entertainment Holding, according to NSE parent Forest City Realty Trust. The transaction values the team at $875 million and the arena at $825 million, including debt.

Mallie to head Populous’ new office
Sports architect Populous opened a new office in New York led by Jonathan Mallie, formerly with SHoP Architects. Mallie’s past sports projects include Barclays Center and Nassau Coliseum. For Populous, he is leading the effort to design the Jacksonville Jaguars’ new training facility and a new amphitheater next to EverBank Field.

PHILADELPHIA
Sixers borrow $44M from Firstrust

Firstrust Bank is providing the Philadelphia 76ers with a $44 million construction loan for the team’s 125,000-square-foot training complex and corporate office in Camden, N.J. In addition to the team’s corporate offices, the complex will house two basketball courts; performance, recovery, and hydrotherapy rooms; and more than 10,000 square feet of mixed-use commercial and conference space. The team expects the project to be completed by the end of this year.

PORTLAND
Blazers plates a first for state

Oregon drivers will be able to buy a specialty license plate saluting the Portland Trail Blazers starting in late spring. Created by a bill signed into law last summer, the plate marks the first for an Oregon professional sports team. The Trail Blazers Foundation will benefit from the plate’s $40 surcharge.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.
Dual display set for PC stadium

Providence College selected Daktronics to design, manufacture and install new main and marquee LED video displays for Anderson Stadium, home to Friars soccer and lacrosse. The new main display will feature a 13HD pixel layout and will measure 12 feet high by 18 feet wide. On the reverse side, a marquee display will welcome fans to events.

Airline renews with golf event
Etihad Airways is renewing its sponsorship with the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship for the next five years, through 2020. Etihad and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council signed an agreement to extend the airline’s long-standing partnership with the annual European Tour event.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND
BBC airing live gymnastics
The BBC will be broadcasting live from the 2016 British Gymnastics Championships on April 10, the final day of the event. The event takes place at the Echo Arena in Liverpool starting April 8. It will be the final chance to see Britain’s gymnasts on home soil before the Rio Olympics.

READING, ENGLAND
Team signs new ticket partnership
Premiership rugby club London Irish agreed to a deal with ticketing software company Ticket ABC, according to an iSportconnect report. Club supporters will be able to buy tickets on their mobile devices and through the team’s Facebook page.

RIO DE JANEIRO
Price of Olympics nears $10B
The head of the group monitoring spending on the Olympics said that the price tag for the 2016 Games has risen by $99.3 million since August, mainly due to supplying temporary power and seating at venues, according to a Reuters report. The projected total cost now stands at $9.78 billion.

IOC confident amid Zika concerns
The International Olympic Committee advised national Olympic committees to follow the World Health Organization’s guidance on dealing with the Zika virus, asserting its confidence that the Games will be safe, according to an AP report. Brazil has been hit hard by the mosquito-borne virus.

Weightlifters banned from Games
Bulgaria’s weightlifters are banned from this year’s Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected an appeal against a ban for numerous anti-doping violations, according to a Reuters report. In November, the International Weightlifting Federation sanctioned the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation and fined it $500,000 after 11 lifters tested positive for the banned anabolic steroid stanozolol.
