While Jeremy Jacobs is clearly “The Chairman” when it comes to the family business, those close to the family note the important yet behind-the-scenes role of the family matriarch, Margaret, known as Peggy. The two were married in 1958 and will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary in August.

“Peggy and I were in high school together,” Jacobs said. “We became very friendly in school. She came from a terrific value system. She kept herself very well rounded. She manages me very well. She’s the boss where she needs to be the boss. To me, that is important.

“It is very important that I have that stability at home. That gives you the freedom to pursue your professional career. She really put my professional career first. She put the business first. She also made it very clear that you are going to struggle and you have to be committed to your kids because, A, she wanted me to, and, B, that is what she said we committed to do.”

With six children, Jacobs worked hard at creating a better work-life balance than his father.

“The way my dad did things versus the way I decided to do it is quite different,” he said. “I really did try to strike a balance. At one time, my wife said, ‘Look, you aren’t seeing the kids. You need to spend more time with them.’ Which was very important, and I changed.”

Today, with 18 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, family remains an emphasis for The Chairman.

“Family is always on his shirtsleeve,” said his oldest son, Jeremy Jr. “He will always say, ‘Did you call your sister? Your brother?’ He really pushes that.”
