Super Bowl

Sharing highs and lows with players

LEIGH STEINBERG
Steinberg Sports & Entertainment
The well-known agent has attended 19 Super Bowls.

Warren Moon and I attended my first game in 1983. He was still playing in the CFL and that game reinforced his belief that he belonged as an NFL starter.

In 1986, I had my first client start at quarterback, Tony Eason of the Patriots. Unfortunately, they played the star-laden Chicago Bears and it was a blowout. My first experience consoling a heartbroken client, and a long, sad trek back to the hotel.

Troy Aikman entered the Rose Bowl in 1993 as a very good quarterback. After being MVP in a 52-17 rout, I asked him whether he had absorbed what happened. “Yes, we won,” he replied. “No, your life will change forever,” I responded. “You are now Troy Aikman: Superstar in blazing lights.” When our limo got back to the hotel, he stepped out and was immediately mobbed by fans.

Steve Young, 49er quarterback, had played in the shadow of Joe Montana. After he threw six TD passes against the Chargers and won MVP honors, I ran down on the field to congratulate him. He hugged me and yelled, “The monkey’s off my back, the monkey’s off my back!” He was completely dehydrated after doing extensive postgame interviews and kept complaining that he felt sick as we took a limo to the hotel. He then threw up on me and draftee Kerry Collins, and was promptly put on an IV in his hotel room. All of his family and friends surrounded the bed. Some Super Bowl night celebration.
