Olympic alumni get invites to U.S. trials

USA Gymnastics wants to turn its women’s Olympic trials this July into a massive family reunion.

The governing body is inviting all 198 living athletes who made a U.S. Olympic gymnastics team, including alternates, to San Jose on July 8-10 for a celebration. That includes both genders and every discipline.

Each athlete will receive travel costs, tickets to competition sessions at the SAP Center, invitations to the Hall of Fame lunch and tickets to a special Saturday event. President Steve Penny acknowledged that the reunion will be costly but said the organization’s foundation and existing corporate sponsorship revenue will cover the expense. They won’t seek a specific sponsor for the reunion.

“This is something we believe will make the Olympic trials a bigger event, and it’s something we believe all our sponsors benefit from,” Penny said. “So it’s not something we’re seeking additional money for.”
