Stays in Vegas: NASCAR signs deal to keep end-of-season activities in Las Vegas though ‘16

Sin City will continue to be synonymous with NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Champion’s Week, as the sanctioning body has struck a multiyear pact with the city of Las Vegas to continue holding its end-of-season awards and other related activities there.

The deal, which will be announced this week, will see NASCAR continue holding its weeklong celebration in Las Vegas through at least 2016. The Wynn will remain the awards banquet’s host hotel.

NASCAR began hosting its premier series’ awards show in Las Vegas in 2009 following a 28-year run in New York City. The prior contract expired last year. NASCAR did not consider switching to any other cities, according to Steve Phelps, executive vice president and chief marketing officer.

“We’ve had a great run since 2009, and I think the industry has embraced the city,” Phelps said. “It’s a great partnership and a fantastic city and a great backdrop for us to have our Las Vegas race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, then have our championship week activities. So it’s something that we were excited to try to get done, and I think the folks at Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority were excited to do that as well.”

Phelps said Las Vegas works well because “fans have come and supported us very strongly year in and year out and because of our partnership with the city, the LVCVA as well as Las Vegas Events. It’s an ideal city, got a lot of great venues to do things at, so it’s a natural for us.”

While Phelps said most of the events during the Champion’s Week will closely resemble the way they’ve looked in past years outside of a few venue changes, one thing that is different will be the format of the 16th annual Daytona Rising/NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum, hosted by SportsBusiness Journal/Daily.

For the first time, outside of its initial two-day run in Las Vegas, the event will include a third day to be held Feb. 17 at Daytona International Speedway. That will provide executives with a look at the newly completed, $400 million Daytona Rising project, which has seen the track’s frontstretch and other key areas almost completely remade in advance of next year’s Daytona 500.

The first two days of the Motorsports Marketing Forum will be held Dec. 1 and 2 at The Mirage in Las Vegas.

“To be able to showcase the Daytona Rising project and have the industry come see it as kind of a first peek is going to be fantastic,” Phelps said. “Even though the name with the Daytona Rising/NASCAR Motorsports Marketing Forum is a bit of a mouthful, we’re very excited to showcase that.”
